Will Mamdani Veto? What's Going on with NY-12? Who Named This Substack? Welcome to Sosa v. State!
Let's start the conversation.
I’m New York political strategist Chris Sosa, and welcome to Sosa v. State! Whether you’re a journalist, campaign professional, local activist, elected official or just a friend of the show, happy to have you here.
What is this?
Sosa v. State provides original editorial content, curates top political journalism, interviews leading voices and more! You’ll get access to content you won’t see anywhere else as we make sense of a chaotic world and hold power to account.
It’s going to be a bit messy at the start, and I appreciate your patience.
What is this not?
Neutral news reporting. I’m a political strategist with a background in commentary. You’re getting my perspective here, which is informed by my professional and personal experiences. I’ll do my best to demonstrate trustworthiness at all times, and I expect my audience to hold me to it. But I bring a strong and unapologetic editorial perspective.
What is the Sosa v. State editorial perspective?
You’re not going to get traditional Democratic (or Republican) party-line opinion. I sit in the left sector with libertarian instincts, and I’ll be talking to voices from across the political spectrum. Some may surprise you.
Why is it called Sosa v. State?
Because New York’s favorite editor-in-chief Jeff Coltin says that “fits” my “vibe.” (Hat tip to Billy Freeland for iterating with me at the start.)
Thanks for being here, and I look forward to the coming conversations! Don’t hesitate to be in touch.
In the News:
I talked to Hell Gate about the choice before Mayor Zohran Mamdani: sign the New York City Council’s protest bills or veto. Mamdani faces a major test as he decides who he’s willing to make angry and where his base fits into his governance strategy.
My take: “Signing this bill would represent capitulation on the issue that defined the entire mayoral race, especially for the young voters who dedicated the most work to his campaign and propelled him to a decisive victory.”
I interviewed Nina Schwalbe and Jack Schlossberg at Inspir Carnegie Hill. You can watch a slightly janky upload here. Stay tuned for the next episode, which will feature AM Alex Bores, AM Micah Lasher and (if he confirms!) George Conway.
I appeared on Ghost Runner Pod to discuss the NY-12 race. Catch Eli Miller’s interview with me here. We’ll be circling back later in the cycle with the latest updates in the race.
